About Movie[Crack]House…
Movie[Crack]House is me, Helena. By day I’m the Creative Director for a Boston-based speaker company, by night a jewelry designer and writer, originally from Toronto but now residing outside of Boston MA. My husband and I have been together for amost 14 years and for the first 12 or so we went to the movies every weekend, sometimes twice if it was a busy week for great movies opening – maybe missing 5 weekends TOTAL. In the last couple of years we bought a house and have been busy fixing it up and enjoying it, so it takes more to get us to go to the theater, but we still go pretty regularly. And we also use netflix to catch up on movies we didn’t get to see in the theater [or that didn't end up in a theater near us].
I watch movies for pure entertainment value. I don’t go for some existential experience – 9 times out of 10, anyway – once in a while it’s great to see a movie that can dig deeper and make you think. I also tend to stay away from movies that are too depressing because I’ve experienced enough drama to last a lifetime and don’t need to watch someone else fake it. So, sometimes all it takes is some hot eye candy and fast cars to make me happy – if I know what I’m getting into and it’s well done, I can enjoy almost anything. So for the most part, my reviews will be on the positive side. It’s rare that we go into a movie and absolutely hate it, but those reviews will appear here, if/when it happens [and that happens when the preview is deceptive or unclear enough that we truly didn't know what we were getting into].
If we head to the theater over the weekend, I’ll post a review for whatever we saw as soon as I can, and in between I’ll review older ones as I reference them, or as I have time. Between the two of us we’ve seen thousands… my hubs is the horror buff, so I’ll relay his opinion on films of that genre if I didn’t see them myself, and I sometimes go for the sappy romantic thing if the mood strikes, so hopefully I’ll cover all the bases. I do tend to go for pure fun so there will probably be more action, thriller and sci-fi… but I also enjoy crime dramas, foreign and indy films.
My intent for this blog is to be a resource for anyone who wants to go see a movie but isn’t sure if it’s worth it and is looking for an honest appraisal from someone who’s seen enough to know what’s good and what just isn’t – an honest opinion and not a snobby, pretentious one like you get from the likes of ‘professional critics.’ I almost always disagree with their assessments, which was another reason for starting this blog!
I’m also a car buff, so occasionally I’ll be pointing out if a film features any hot cars we liked. And eventually, because we’re also TV addicts, I may throw TV show reviews in here too, now that you can get almost any TV show on DVD. =)
Thanks for visiting. Enjoy!
~ HELENA
PS – In case you’re wondering what’s up with the ‘Crack House’, to us, movies are like crack. And “Movie Crack House” sounded funny… ;)
I took the photo at the top of the page in Providence while we were having dinner outside at Andino’s on Federal Hill. We had a gorgeous sunset and the sky was just unreal.
