Going In Blind
I figured I’d broach the topic of how much I generally know going into a movie. The answer: Almost nothing. I purposefully avoid hype, and once more than just the original preview [or trailer] is out there, I avoid it like the plague. I’ve been disappointed too many times when the surprise is taken away because I saw too many clips or read reviews that were way too detailed before watching a movie. My husband and I have been known to change channels while closing our eyes if we happen to be watching something that gives up too much info on something we know we want to check out.
This obviously has it’s limitations – if the preview sucks, we may not bother with the movie until it’s recommended to us by someone we trust. This happens from time to time, but not often enough for us to change our ‘policy.’ And half the time, if there’s nothing else out that we want to see, we’ll go for something, even if the trailer was just ‘eh’ if we like the actors or director. The only time I’ll look up a movie and read more about it is if it’s more obscure and there just isn’t a lot of buzz for it – and I have absolutely no idea what it’s about. I actually like the netflix synopsis because it gives just enough info to make a decision, but not too much that it ruins any surprises.
I also find movies based on actors or directors after I’ve seen something I like. Kind of like how I find new music. I’ll hit amazon and look up something I like and see what other people who liked it bought. That way I can feel good about giving up my time for a movie and know I have a pretty good chance of enjoying it.
So… this is pretty much a long-winded explanation as to why it seems I know so little about movies going in, and why I may admit to avoiding them until they’re recommended. I’m all about the experience, baby… ;)
